(From left to right: My brother Nolan, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, me and my girlfriend Alexis Savinda) Halloween has now passed, and for some, that means the Christmas season is upon us. I personally beleive that the start of Christmas season, and Logan Carney birthday season, is Black Friday. That being said, considering a lot of people view the start of the holidays on the first day of November and I’m battling a serious case of writer’s block, I figured we’d do a Pittsburgh Traditions post this evening.
For those of you that don’t know, my birthday is December 15th. Now, besides going to see family we at the Carney house don’t have any big traditions to celebrate Christmas. But, my birthday, we have a few. In a non-Pittsburgh sense, my girlfriend and I have recently jumped onto a Star Wars tradition. Considering the past three movies have come out on my birthday, with this one coming out exactly the day of, then that tradition is fitting. Star Wars sells out everywhere in opening weekend, so that tradition is not exclusive. That’s why I’m here to talk about Pittsburgh traditions. During the 2011-2012 Pittsburgh Pirates offseason, the Pirates decided to push Piratefest up to my birthday weekend. That paticular year, it fell exactly on my birthday. Considering, at the time, we were all exicted about the future of the franchise, we went and a tradition was born. This tradition has led to many things. I remember waiting in the autograph line the first year for six hours until we finally got to the front and my older brother, Austen, rubbed Clint Barmes’s bald head. The following year, we had some of my friends come. That year, the Pirates were kind enough to have Josh Harrison, Alex Presley and Jack Wilson meet us. During the 2013-2014 off season, Austen entered the Perogee eating contest and lost while Nolan won a chance to change the bases through Card Sharks. That started a string of our group being in the perogee eating contest. That following off-season, with my friend not being able to come, we had Jeff Locke call him and make fun of him. I can remember the conversation perfectally when he said, “you’re those type of friends aren’t you” and ended with “that was the most awkward thing that I’ve ever done.” Also during that same Piratefest, I remember frekaing out like a little girl when AJ Burnett stood behind me for a solid ten minutes before I noticed. Not to mention Nolan followed Clint Hurdle into the bathroom to get an autograph, the first of two awkward meetings with the Pirates manager for my younger brother. Unfortunately, the past two off-seasons, it’s been difficult to get everything together so my friends could come. Luckily, my girlfriend Alexis joined us when we started dating four years ago. Those next two years were not without their moments however. One that comes to mind is, after years of our group failing to come close, Nolan managed to win the perogee eating contest. He won tickets to six games and only ended up going to about two of them. That’s Nolan though. So, that’s the closet thing I have to a holiday tradition. A birthday celebration at a fan fest for my faborite, and the most frustrating team in Pittsburgh. Let us know about your Pittsburgh traditions. Please comment here or reach out to us via facebook, twitter or email. We want to know what makes your yinzer holidays! -L.C P.S. I apologize for the writer’s block.
